Srinagar to Doodhpathri: The Meadow Nobody Plans ยท ZoonCabs
Srinagar to Doodhpathri is the shortest meadow day out of the city, a drive through Budgam to a green bowl at about 2,700 metres, and this is ZoonCabs's guide to it for the agency with a spare day in a package: the road, what the day is, the season and the vehicle.
Doodhpathri is about 42 km from Srinagar, south-west through Budgam, and around an hour and a half to two hours door to door. It is the meadow almost nobody plans and everybody remembers: a wide green bowl at around 2,700 metres with a stream running through it, pines on the slopes, and far fewer people than Gulmarg. For an agency it is the day trip that rescues a package with a spare day.
The road
Out of Srinagar past the airport side to Budgam, then south-west through villages and orchards, climbing gently. The last stretch enters the pines and comes out at the meadow. It is a good road most of the way and a narrow one at the end. Tempo travellers reach the car park in season; the itinerary builder will say if a particular vehicle is not for it.
What the day is
The vehicle stops at the meadow. From there it is on foot or by pony: the stream, the "valley of milk" the name refers to, and the walks up the sides of the bowl. Two to three hours on the meadow is a day well spent; a client who wants to go higher takes a pony. There is little in the way of shops or restaurants, so the driver carries the lunch or the agency books a packed one. Back in Srinagar by late afternoon, which is the point: it is a full day out that does not cost the evening.
Round trip
About 85 km and around five hours of driving and meadow, the shortest of the meadow days. It pairs well with a half day: Doodhpathri in the morning and the Mughal gardens or the old city in the late afternoon, on the same day hire. The Srinagar day trips guide compares it with the rest.
Season
May to October is the season, with the meadow at its greenest in June and July and the light best in September. Snow closes the last stretch for parts of the winter and turns it into a snow day when it is open; do not promise Doodhpathri for December to February without an alternative. The winter transport guide covers the cold months.
Vehicle
A sedan for a couple in season, an SUV for a family or the shoulder months, a tempo traveller for a group as far as the meadow. The Kashmir cabs page has the classes.
Booking it
An agency books Srinagar to Doodhpathri from its ZoonCabs account as a day excursion, or as a day in a longer itinerary with the same driver as the rest of the trip. The figure in the account includes parking and the driver for the day. Rates are shown on registration; the pricing explainer covers what moves them.
Frequently asked questions from agencies
How far is Doodhpathri from Srinagar?
About 42 km through Budgam, around an hour and a half to two hours door to door, on a good road that narrows in the pines at the end. A round trip is about 85 km and around five hours with two or three hours on the meadow, which makes it the shortest of the meadow days and the one that fits a half day beside a city afternoon.
Can a tempo traveller go to Doodhpathri?
In season, to the meadow car park, yes. The final kilometres through the pines are narrow, and the itinerary builder flags any vehicle class that is not for it on a given date. In the shoulder months an SUV is the safer choice for the final kilometres; from the car park it is on foot or by pony for everyone.
Is Doodhpathri open in winter?
On and off. Snow shuts the road for parts of the winter, and when they are open the meadow is a snow day rather than the green bowl the photographs show. Sell it for May to October, treat a winter visit as a bonus dispatch confirms on the day, and never promise it in a December package.
