Katra to Srinagar by Road ยท ZoonCabs
Katra to Srinagar by road is the leg that joins the Vaishno Devi shrine to the Kashmir valley, the longest single drive in most pilgrim itineraries, and this is ZoonCabs's guide to planning it for a party that has just done the yatra: the road, the day, the stops, the vehicle and the season.
A great many Kashmir packages begin at the Vaishno Devi shrine and end on the Dal. Katra to Srinagar is the leg that joins them, and it is the longest single drive in most itineraries. About 230 km by the highway, and around seven hours door to door in normal conditions. This is how to plan it for a pilgrim party.
The road
Katra down to the highway near Udhampur, then north on the national highway through the Chenab valley, the tunnels, Banihal, and over into the valley at Qazigund. From there the road flattens and runs up the valley to Srinagar. It is the same highway as Jammu to Srinagar, joined a little way along; the Jammu to Srinagar guide covers the highway and the Mughal Road alternative, which from Katra is rarely worth the detour.
Seven hours is realistic and not a promise. The highway carries freight, closes for hours after heavy rain or snow, and reopens. A package should carry seven hours and be built so that eight does not break the next day.
Planning the drive after the yatra
The mistake is to put the drive north on the same day as the descent from the shrine. A party that has walked up and down overnight is not ready for seven hours in a vehicle at dawn. The sequence that works:
- Day one: Jammu airport or railway station to Katra, about 45 km and an hour and a half. Rest.
- Day two: the yatra. The vehicle is at the party's disposal in Katra on a yatra-day booking; the climb itself is on foot, by pony or by the helicopter service.
- Day three: the drive north, leaving mid-morning, arriving in the evening. Nothing else planned.
- Day four onward: the valley.
A party in a hurry can compress days two and three by descending early and leaving Katra at midday, arriving in Srinagar late. It works for a fit group and is a poor first evening in Kashmir for anyone else.
Stops on the way
Patnitop is a detour off the old highway alignment and is not on the direct route any more; an agency selling it should add a day, not an hour. The practical stops are for food near Udhampur or Ramban and a leg-stretch at Banihal before the tunnel. Once through the tunnel, the saffron fields at Pampore in late October are ten minutes off the line and worth the ten minutes.
The vehicle
Pilgrim parties are large. A tempo traveller for a party above six, sized on the comfortable number for a long highway day rather than the permit number, with a roof carrier for the luggage. Families of five or six, an SUV. The same vehicle and driver from the Jammu pickup through the yatra day, the highway, the valley and the final drop is the operating rule on ZoonCabs, and on this route it matters more than anywhere: pilgrims fresh from the yatra want the driver they know. The tempo traveller page has the layouts; the Jammu and Kashmir page has the Jammu side.
Season
The highway is open all year. In winter it closes after heavy snow and reopens; a party travelling in January should carry a spare half day in the package. In summer the Amarnath Yatra adds convoys and cut-off timings on the same highway, and dispatch plans the day around them. The winter transport guide covers the cold months.
Booking it
From a ZoonCabs partner account, as a leg of the itinerary with the same driver as the Jammu pickup and the yatra day. The figure includes highway and tunnel tolls, parking, and the driver's allowance and night halts the itinerary carries. Rates are shown on registration.
Frequently asked questions from agencies
How long is the drive up from Katra?
About 230 km by the national highway and around seven hours door to door in normal conditions. Carry seven hours in the package and build the next day so that eight does not break it.
Should the drive to Srinagar be the day after the yatra?
Yes, the following day, leaving mid-morning and arriving in the evening with nothing else planned. Pilgrims who have climbed to the shrine and back overnight are not ready for a full highway day at dawn. Putting the drive on the descent day is the most common way a pilgrim package goes wrong.
Does the cab go up to the shrine itself?
No vehicle does. The cab drops at Katra, about 45 km and an hour and a half from Jammu, and waits on a yatra-day booking. The climb to the shrine is on foot, by pony or by the helicopter service, none of which is a cab. The same vehicle and driver then continue to Srinagar.
