Jammu to Srinagar: Highway or Mughal Road · ZoonCabs

Jammu to Srinagar is the drive into the Kashmir valley from the Jammu side, and it has two roads that are not interchangeable: the all-year national highway and the seasonal Mughal Road over the Pir Panjal. This is ZoonCabs's guide to which one an agency should quote, and when.

There are two ways to drive into the Kashmir valley from the Jammu side, and they are not interchangeable.

The highway: about 270 km, around eight hours

The Jammu–Srinagar national highway is the default and the only all-year answer. It is long, it is busy with freight, and it is subject to closures after heavy rain or snow — but it is maintained as a lifeline route and it reopens.

Eight hours is a realistic figure in normal conditions. It is not a promise. The highway is also the road most likely to hold you up and most likely to eventually let you through.

The Mughal Road: about 190 km, around seven hours

Shorter in distance and barely shorter in time, because it climbs over the Pir Panjal at Peer Ki Gali and the road does not permit speed. What it offers instead is the drive itself, which is one of the best in the region, and an approach to the valley that no one on the highway sees.

The catch is the season. It closes with snow and stays closed for months. If you are travelling between late autumn and spring, this road is not an option and no amount of planning changes that.

How to choose

  • Travelling in winter? The highway. There is no decision to make.
  • Want the drive to be part of the trip? The Pir Panjal road, in season, with a night at the far end rather than pushing straight through.
  • Need to be somewhere at a specific time? The highway, and leave a day of slack.

Katra and Vaishno Devi in the same trip

Many people arrive in Jammu for Vaishno Devi and go on to Kashmir afterwards. Katra to Srinagar is about 260 km and roughly eight hours — much the same as from Jammu, since Katra is only about 50 km off the route.

Doing the shrine and then driving to Srinagar on the same day is a very long day. It is usually better as a transfer with a night built in.

Flying instead

Srinagar has an airport and the flight from Jammu is short. If the road is the means rather than the point, fly and spend the day you saved in the valley.

Frequently asked questions from agencies

How long does Jammu to Srinagar take by road?

Eight hours or so on the national highway in normal conditions, for about 270 km through the Chenab valley, the tunnels and Banihal. It is a realistic figure and not a promise: the highway carries freight, closes for hours or a day after heavy rain or snow, and reopens. A package should carry eight hours and be built so that nine does not break the next day.

When is the Mughal Road open?

Roughly May to November, when the pass at Peer Ki Gali is clear of snow; it shuts for the winter and the highway becomes the only road in. At about 190 km and seven hours it is shorter in distance and barely shorter in time, because it climbs over the pass. Dispatch chooses the road by season and the day's conditions, and tells the agency before travel.

Which road should a package use into the valley?

The highway, unless the client wants the Mughal Road for the drive itself in summer or autumn. The highway stays open all year and is the one that eventually lets a party through; the seasonal road is the better day when it is open and the worse gamble when the weather turns. Quote the highway time either way.

Does the same driver continue from Jammu into the valley?

Yes. A client picked up at Jammu airport or railway station meets one driver who takes them across the mountains, around the valley and back for the train or flight out. It is the operating rule on ZoonCabs, and it matters most on this road, where the drive is long, the closures are real, and the client wants the person who drove them in to drive them out.
