Group Transport in Kashmir: 12 to 40 People ยท ZoonCabs
Group transport in Kashmir is how parties of 12 to 40 people are moved around the valley, in tempo travellers and SUVs mixed as one booking rather than in a coach, and this is ZoonCabs's guide to sizing the vehicles, keeping families together and booking the lot as one.
Twelve people is one tempo traveller. Forty people are not three tempo travellers and a prayer. This is how groups in Kashmir are actually put together for parties between twelve and forty: which vehicles, how they are mixed, what the roads allow, and how it is booked as one thing rather than several.
The vehicles that exist
Tempo travellers in 12, 14 and 17 seat layouts, SUVs for five or six, sedans for three or four. Coaches above 17 seats are outside the platform and, for most of the valley's roads, outside good sense: the climb to Gulmarg, the Sindh valley and anything above Pahalgam are not coach roads. Groups in Kashmir travel in several vehicles, and the arrangement is about making several vehicles behave like one booking.
Sizing on the comfortable number
The seat count on a permit and the seat count for five days of hill roads with luggage are different numbers. A 17 seater carries fifteen in comfort with bags; a 12 seater carries ten. Book on the comfortable number and the group arrives on day five still speaking to each other.
| Party | The usual mix | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 12 to 15 | One 17 seater | Together, with luggage on the rack |
| 16 to 22 | A 17 seater plus an SUV, or two 12 seaters | Keeps families together; the SUV takes the party that wants to peel off |
| 23 to 30 | Two 17 seaters, or a 17, a 12 and an SUV | Two escorts, two drivers who talk to each other |
| 31 to 40 | Three tempo travellers with an SUV alongside | The SUV is the group leader's vehicle and the spare seats |
The account's itinerary builder proposes the vehicles for a party and prices it as one booking. It nudges toward the combination that makes the better trip, which is not always the fewest vehicles.
Keeping families together
The one rule that matters more than any vehicle count: a family travels in one vehicle. A group booking that splits a family across two tempo travellers because the numbers worked is a booking the escort spends five days apologising for. Give dispatch the family groupings and the vehicles are manifested around them.
The escort's vehicle
Groups above twenty travel better with an SUV in the mix for the escort or group leader: it can run ahead to check a road, go back for the person who left their bag, and take the party of four who want the meadow when the rest want lunch. It costs a vehicle and saves a day.
What the roads allow
- Gulmarg in snow: tempo travellers may transfer to SUVs at Tangmarg, decided on the day.
- Above Pahalgam: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari are local union vehicles for everybody; the group's vehicles wait in Pahalgam.
- Old Srinagar: a walk from wherever the vehicles can park.
- Doodhpathri and Yusmarg: fine for tempo travellers to the meadow car parks; ponies beyond.
The tempo traveller page has the detail; the winter transport guide covers the cold months.
One booking, several vehicles
On ZoonCabs a group is one itinerary, one figure with the agency's discount applied, and one voucher that lists every vehicle with its driver's name and number and its manifest. The drivers are assigned as a set for the whole trip and dispatch coordinates them; the escort has one number to call. The transport booking page walks through the steps.
Pilgrim, student and corporate groups
Pilgrim parties for Vaishno Devi and the Amarnath Yatra have their own road rules and timings; see Katra to Srinagar and Amarnath Yatra transport. Student tours travel with a ratio and a schedule, and dispatch has both. Corporate groups combine day hire for the offsite with a day trip; the corporate transport page covers accounts.
Frequently asked questions from agencies
How do you move 30 people in Kashmir?
In two 17-seater tempo travellers, or a 17, a 12 and one SUV, booked as one itinerary with one voucher and coordinated by dispatch. Coaches do not suit the Gulmarg climb or the Sindh valley. Each family rides in a single vehicle, and a separate SUV gives the escort a vehicle that can run ahead or go back.
Can a large group stay together in one vehicle?
Up to fifteen in comfort with luggage in a 17-seater tempo traveller, or ten to twelve in a 12-seater. Above that it is two or more vehicles, with each family in a single vehicle and the escort in an SUV. Coaches above 17 seats are outside the platform and do not suit the Gulmarg climb or the road up to Sonamarg.
Is a group booking priced per vehicle or as a whole?
As a whole. The account prices the vehicle mix for the itinerary as one figure with the agency's standing discount applied, and issues one voucher listing every vehicle with its driver and manifest. The agency sees one number to mark up and one reference to manage, however many vehicles are on the road.
