Day trips from Srinagar: the ones worth the drive · ZoonCabs
Day trips from Srinagar are the out-and-back excursions a client can make from the city and return the same evening, and this guide is ZoonCabs's ranking of the nine worth the drive, by the driving they actually take rather than the distance on the map.
Srinagar is a good base because almost everything in the valley is a day away. Not everything is worth the day. Here is what the driving actually looks like.
The three everyone does
- Gulmarg — about 104 km round trip, most of a day. Meadow, gondola, and the shortest drive of the three.
- Pahalgam — about 190 km there and back and closer to ten hours. The longest of the standard three. Worth it, but not on the day you fly out.
- Sonamarg — about 174 km round trip, around nine hours. The drive itself is the point; the Sindh valley is the best road in Kashmir. Closed for part of the winter.
The ones almost nobody plans
These are the days people describe afterwards and did not intend beforehand.
- Doodhpathri — about 94 km out and back, six hours. Meadows and water, an hour and a half out, and a fraction of the traffic.
- Yusmarg and Charar-i-Sharief — about 90 km, six hours. The shrine and the meadow in one day, and the shortest of the quiet options.
- Tral valley — about 80 km, five hours. The easiest half-day that still gets you properly out of the city.
The longer ones
- Wular Lake — about 140 km, seven hours. The largest freshwater lake in the region and nothing like Dal.
- Lolab valley — about 180 km, nine hours. A long day for a valley very few visitors reach.
- Uri and the Kaman Post — about 205 km, nine hours. A border day trip, and the one most worth checking conditions on before you commit.
Choosing between them
If you have one day, take Gulmarg — it is the shortest drive and the highest return. With two, add Pahalgam and stay the night rather than driving back. If you have three and have been to Kashmir before, take Doodhpathri and go home telling nobody.
One practical note
Every one of these is a full day with a driver, and the day ends where it started. If your plan is really a one-way move to the next valley, an overnight package covers the same ground without the return leg, and usually for less.
Frequently asked questions from agencies
Which day trip from Srinagar is the shortest?
Doodhpathri, roughly 85 km there and back in around five hours with time on the meadow, closely followed by Yusmarg at about 95 km and six hours with the shrine stop. Gulmarg comes in near 104 km both ways and most of a day. Pahalgam and Sonamarg are the long ones and better as overnights, especially on the day a client flies out.
How many day trips can a client do from Srinagar in three days?
Two, comfortably, with a city day between them. Three day trips in three days means three early starts and three long evenings in the car, and the client arrives at the airport having seen the road more than the valley. Where the itinerary has more days, the Gulmarg and Pahalgam circuit as overnights beats two separate day trips on the same approach roads.
Can the same driver do every day trip in an itinerary?
Yes. On ZoonCabs the day trips are booked as legs of one itinerary, and one transporter, one driver and the same vehicle are assigned for all of them, named on the voucher before travel. The driver learns the party and the hotel on day one, and dispatch has the whole plan rather than a chain of separate hires.
Which day trips close in winter?
Sonamarg closes for part of the winter from the first heavy snow until spring, and Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are on and off with the snow on their last stretches. Gulmarg stays open as the ski season road, slow above Tangmarg, and Pahalgam town stays reachable while the valleys above it come and go. A winter package should carry an alternative day rather than a promise.
